“No sign of the morning coming
You’ve been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
A rainbow in the dark”
– From the song Rainbow In The Dark by Ronnie James Dio
Q & A with Photographer Nicholas Steever:
JS: What inspired for the Rainbow In The Dark editorial?
NS: I shot this story with stylist Annie Caruso and Hair/Makeup artist Deborah Brider with Marcus and Ashley Kreiger and Angelina Palma as our subjects. We wanted a dark and stormy story with a vibrant rainbow coming in as the main light, which I used an optical prism to create (with a TON of wattage!)
I think it kind of speaks to what we wanted to say visually, with the stormy, almost-gone, dusky light and the rainbow cutting in and shining on these kids faces.
JS: How did you create the Rainbow light in the images?
NS: This story is one that I had to really grow my lighting knowledge in a short amount of time to pull off. I knew how optical prisms worked but I needed to figure out how to apply that to studio strobes to make one *into* a light.
So I called up photographers I used to work with, the ones with the geekiest, techiest, smartest lighting minds I knew and pieced together the plan, which I had to experiment with for hours to finally work out. In the end, it took 4800 watts for every frame!
JS: Where did you get the inspiration for the title of the editorial?
NS: We named it after a song by the late, great Ronnie James Dio!
