We are DREAMING of…
Pink. Pink represents love, sweetness, happiness, kindness, romance, compassion, softness and affection. Pink is associated with femininity and could also be associated with being in young love or the healing powers of love and friendship.
Q & A with ERIKA, The Photographer
Hi Erika! Tell us a little bit about this shoot.
Erika: This entire shoot came to my mind when I first saw this unique all-pink-house in a decor website. The pastel pink from walls to ceiling plus all the tropical plants inside were so amazing. I instantly dreamt about shooting an editorial there. I first spoke to Kika and told her my ideas, and that it would be cool to stick to a colour palette for the styling and she loved it. Then I knew the upcoming issue of Hooligans would be about dreams. Bingo! I spoke to Nat who fell in love with the story too.
It looks like we just stepped into someone’s dream, how did you achieve that look?
Erika: Yes right? Well, in my mind I had always imagined the editorial happening in a slow motion kinda vibe. We even put some Enya as a soundtrack during the shoot, we told the models we were really inside a dream. Since Gyovanna is bigger than Leticia and Manu and many outfits we did not have in her size, she appears in fewer images than the little ones. So Gyovanna is their imaginary friend. To really give a dreamy look to some of the photos – and I did not want to do it in post/photoshop – I then decided to use Vaseline in my lenses and also a pink cellophane paper. It came out exactly the way I expected and I was so happy with the result, the images have almost zero retouches in the post.
What do you dream about?
Erika: Ahhh, so many things. I dream about shooting more and more creative stories like this. Hooligans have been such an inspiration to shoot for. You allow photographers, art directors and stylists to really put out their stories that make us proud and make us feel ourselves. I dream about shooting all over the world without boundaries. I am already lucky enough to shoot internationally a few times a year but travelling is never enough for me. I’m an Aquarius, that might explain it.
Q & A with NATASSCHA, the Art Director:
How did you come up with this concept?
Erika said to me on the phone call: “I really want to shoot a story in this pink apartment. Would you be the art director for this? Do you think we should make an editorial for the “MADE OUT OF DREAMS” issue there?” I received pictures of the pink apartment as per our conversation. I had a good look at it. We shared thoughts and ideas. Erika knew I would be inspired immediately; she was right. The pink soft mystique vibe already had my name on it. I head the whispers. Dreaming is beyond interesting. Everybody dreams every night all over the world. Babies, children, teenagers, adults and even our dogs. No beginnings. No endings. No limitations. Just everything is possible.
In dreams, we are on our own. It’s totally individual. C. Jung also considered the individual, with guidance, had the best understanding of the meaning of their dreams because the symbolism presented was unique to them. Wow! Some people believe in interpreting their dreams, while some say: “It’s just a dream”. I guess it’s all up to you how you choose to deal with your dreaming.
We sleep half of our lives, most of us. Interpreting or not. Dreaming asleep and daydreaming. We all dream while our bodies are asleep. Dreaming is just totally inspiring. That’s why I decided to welcome Erika’s invitation. I wanted to work with the dreamy symbols and the interpretation of colours and numbers in a beautiful, mystique pink way based on the feel of the apartment and the 3 amazing girls. The whole time I hoped to inspire my amazing creative São Paulo team, so they could do magic without my presence but with my thoughts and words in mind.
What do the different elements in the story symbolize?
I was so waiting for that question. I wanted to work with the pink apartment and the lemons appeared in the process. So pink and lemons are the main interpretation of our Pink Lemonade story. I could write much more as there are also the Trinity, the flamingos, the interpretation of an apartment/house, windows, plants, amount of lemons. Pink Lemonade is a visualisation of a dream and only the sky’s the limit here to get the meaning and depending on how deep you want to go, but anyway here are two answers to your question
Pink represents love, sweetness, happiness, kindness, romance, compassion, softness and affection. Pink is associated with femininity and could also be associated with being in young love or the healing powers of love and friendship. Dreaming of lemons often suggests that you are going to be able to take good actions in the future and suggests that you are going through a process of growth. Generally, dreaming of lemons is a sign of good wealth.
