JS: Where did the inspiration for the Surreal Wander come from?

MM: I had reached out to Sara Foldenauer or “Sets by Sara” and I asked her if there were any sets she would be up for making. I feel Sara is one of the best set designers around and have always been a huge fan of her work.

Sara threw out a few ideas and we both got excited about the idea of hikers. I then reached out to Mariah Walker and we all started to push the concept into something surreal. Between the three of us, we created a world unknown where those kids live.

JS: Why did you use a set as opposed to the world outside?

MM: Sometimes you can use props/sets environmentally but for this set we needed a more controlled environment.  I live in Brooklyn, NY so there are no mountains, hills, waterfalls and forest all in one spot. We wanted to take these elements and then create an environment for each kid that feels bizarre and unusual.

JS: Was this the first time you have worked with Mirah?

MM: This was my first shoot with Mariah but I have done two and we are presently working on our third 🙂

JS: What is that draws you to Kids Fashion Photography?

MM: I like the unawareness, innocence and playfulness of kid photography. I feel it has less structure and more opportunities for less contrived moments. I am a bit of a free spirit at least that’s what I have been told.

JS: Just for fun, when you shot the editorial, was there any music playing in the background and if yes, what was playing?

MM: The photoshoot took place in Sara’s studio and she had a superb mix going but I am pretty sure I remember hearing the “Sara Smiles” by Hall & Oats. I remember because I was laughing about the coincidence.
