In this edition of Chit Chat Tuesday, we get to know cousins Aya Friedman Abrahams and Maya Rapaport Taub, the dynamic duo behind Israeli children’s clothier Mayaya. The funky children’s label known for their soft knits, modern silhouettes, and edgy vibes are already a fave of the Instagram influencer set and we can’t wait to reveal the new SS17 collection later this month—in the meantime, here are some sneak peeks of the new womenswear styles that will be available soon!

JS: Tell us about the new SS17 collection. What are your favourite pieces for boys and girls?

AFA/MRT: Our SS17 collection is very fresh and light, youthful and edgy. We always start our pallet with black and white and then add colour, this time it’s more earthy tones like khaki grey, light blueish grey and light terracotta. The designs are in an oversize fit, comfortable and functional. Our favourite pieces for girls are the new skirt and the pleated back shirt, for boys we love the sleeveless hoodie and the 3/4 harem pants.

JS: You are cousins as well as co-workers. Tell us your favourite shared childhood memory!

AFA/MRT: Our families spent a lot of time together and we were very close from a young age and our friendship grew stronger over the years, even until now our children are also very close and seeing each other a lot. we don’t have a specific memory but lots of them. We used to play endlessly with Barbie dolls, dressing them and doing their hair. We played a lot outside and spent a lot of weekends at the beach.

JS: Do you have any life hacks for ‘doing it all’? As women, mothers, and entrepreneurs how do you stay sane and in balance?

AFA/MRT: I think we can both say that it’s a challenge finding the balance between parenting and family against your career which is actually your dream coming true. It hard sometimes but there is no better way of showing your family and especially your kids that you can chase your dreams and do whatever you are passionate about than leading by example. We both also have a great support system from our families and friends, everyone loves Mayaya.

As for self-care, there is really not a lot of time and it’s a good thing we’re both big fans of the more natural look, but we love going shopping or eating in a good restaurant, and a massage is never a bad idea …

JS: What are you reading/listening to/watching at the moment that you can share with our readers?

Aya: I’m currently loving Michael Kiwanuka latest album “Love and hate” and watching The Walking Dead new episodes.

Maya: listening to a lot of Israeli music like Shlomo Arzi and Arik Einstein and watching Ray Donovan.

JS: Who are your favourite womenswear designers? Apart from Mayaya, what designers do your own kids wear?

AFA/MRT: We love wearing a lot of Israeli designers like On’nanoko and MIS, we love Scotch and Soda, Diesel and Free People. In kidswear, we love Bobo Choses, Nununu and Zara kids is the best.

JS: What kind of growth would you like to see for your brand over the next five years?

AFA/MRT: We hope to get the chance to work with different fabrics such as denim and maybe having an additional accessories line or lifestyle pieces. And of course, keep growing and expanding while learning new things as we roll.

JSThis season sees an expansion into womenswear. How did that come about?

AFA/MRT: Last season we did up to size 12-14 and allot of women bought our pieces for themselves, but only small size women were able to do that, so we decided to do a one size women with 5 of our designs which are the 2 dresses, the square shirt, the pleated back shirt and the harem pants. It makes for a very cool mini me look!
