An Editorial by Marijke de Gruyter.
In this time of overabundance of consumption, trends fading as fast as our snap-chats we would like to create some respite, some stillness and staunch by suggesting ‘to keep’. Look for the beauty in what’s already out there and appreciate it, give it time.
Revalue it by re-using it.
Sustainable fashion is partly about producing clothes, shoes and accessories in environmentally and socio-eco-nomically sustainable manner, but also about more sustainable patterns of consumption and use, which necessitate shifts in individual attitudes and behaviour.
That’s why we would like to promote ‘to keep’ and therefore only used secondhand items for this shoot. Items collected through the years working as a stylist or bought in vintage stores and markets. Recycle! We shot this sustainability fashion on a sustainable farm: Sengersbroek, a small scale ecological pig farm in the South of Holland. The farm is run by Teresa and Peter and they breed the Bonte Bentheimers, a pure authentic pig and 100% organic.
They think that pigs who live a happy live taste much better. That’s why the pigs walk around freely and there is always classical music around on the farm. The big boar Stijn lives with the sows Hopeful, Hofdame, Claudine & Alma (named after the wife of Mahler). It was a pleasure to spend the day with these happy relaxed pigs & farmers and to have some tasty sausages for lunch.
