Cavalier has hit their stride with the SS17 collection Acid Refluxx. While the abundance of neon and jewel-tones deviate from their signature neutral colour palette, the collection manages to feel more quintessentially Cavalier than ever.
Well-loved for their rebellious, anti-establishment vibe, Cavalier continues to draw inspiration from street culture and pop art with Acid Refluxx’s sartorial, gender fluid take on princess mania.
Creative Director Angela Chong’s interpretation of what happens when ‘rainbows throw up on you’—as she puts it with her characteristic wit and snark—is a sublime balance between the gauche and the minimal, and to stunning effect: layers of cascading neon tulle read like understated, casual elegance while sports mesh is elevated to everyday, wearable art.
And let’s be honest— Cavalier is all about wearable art. Every collection has a stand out piece whose concept and construction confer instantly collectible, heirloom status. For Acid Refluxx, that honour goes to the Unicorn Dress—a magical stallion juxtaposed against a geometric black body, with a rainbow mane of multi-colored neon tulle, and a spiraling horn disguised as twisting, silver foil strap.
“This collection is a personal milestone because I feel like we found a real balance between creativity and commercial viability. I reckon that’s the toughest part of designing a label” says Chong about Acid Refluxx’s undeniable appeal.
It’s certainly evidence of how Chong has come into her own—forward looking and subliminally on-trend with beautiful colour blocking, exaggerated and asymmetrical sleeves, a performance wear sensibility, and wide-legged pant options. The collection is also self-referential and draws on the best of past Cavalier collections.
Acid Refluxx sees the reintroduction of the Pasche Dress, updated in black with jewel toned accents. If Cavalier’s most iconic dress—an ode to English designer John Pasche’s Rolling Stone tongue and lips logo—wasn’t edgy enough for you in its first incarnation, the candy-coated psychedelic version will fit the bill.
