Junior Style Blog : New Zealand brand Carbon Soldier launch their SS17 collection and we speak to Barbara the designer about the success of the brand.

Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Carbon Soldier is a luxury childrenswear line designed to be passed down through generations. Brought to life through a pure love of children’s fashion, with each collection Carbon Soldier are known to set their own trends. The styles are the perfect combination of whimsical, edgy and sophisticated while still being comfortable and easy to wear. We were fortunate enough to catch a moment with Barbara McCamish, the creative mind behind the brand to get the inside scoop on all things Carbon Soldier.

Chit Chat Tuesday interview on the Junior Style Kid's Fashion blog with Carbon Soldier

J.S: Where does the inspiration behind each Carbon Soldier collection come from?

B.M: It is so diverse, it can come from the most simple things, tiny details that can set you off on a tangent. We love menswear too and often take inspiration from there.

J.S: What is it that initially attracted you to the world of children’s fashion?

B.M: When I think back I can remember the details of the clothes I owned as a small child. In black and white photos I can remember the colours in detail of my own and my siblings’ outfits. I have worked with women’s fashion, but the passion was always and only for children’s wear.

J.S: Do you have any exciting plans in the works that you can share with us? What’s next for Carbon Soldier?

B.M: Our recent focus has been expansion into the northern hemisphere which we began just three seasons ago. We are overwhelmed with the interest we have had from the world’s most beautiful stores. Like everyone, we have loads of ideas and plans, but try to focus on nailing one thing at a time.

J.S: Do you have a personal style icon?

B.M: Not one in particular. We often look to history, the unfortunate Romanovs were exquisite. Currently, Tom Ford for his perfection.

J.S: You are based in Auckland, NZ but sell internationally, how do you manage to work between the two hemispheres?

B.M: It has been really difficult juggling two hemispheres. We never know what season it is in real life! Collections were being released 6 months later at home and confusion reigned. We have just changed everything around and will now have worldwide releases of collections. Our social media will soon make sense and we won’t despair at having the collections mixed!

J.S: If you could live in any country in the world where would it be?

B.M: Although we love travelling and are overwhelmed with the diversity and history of the cities we have visited recently for trade shows, Florence, Paris, London, New York, it is always good to get home to family and friends and our lush, green, relatively empty home.

J.S: When you are not busy with Carbon Soldier, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

B.M: We are incredibly lucky to live on islands with 10,000 miles of coastline. Auckland ‘the city of sails’ has more boats per capita than any nation in the world. Getting out on the water with family is a perfect way to relax and leave the stress of the world behind. In winter I get along to see my favourite rugby league team, the Warriors, although this is far from stress relief!
