Q & A with photographer Amanda Pratt as seen in the latest issue of Hooligans Magazine

What was your favourite part of this editorial?

My favourite part of this shoot was encouraging the kids to get into their roles like it was a movie: pretending to yell, scream, run away. They loved it! It was my job to capture all the great moments.

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect of photography, and why?

I truly enjoy the process of photography, from the idea and trying to make the concept come to life visually.

What was unique about this editorial?

This editorial was so unique because we had so many different models/characters in it, that it was almost like shooting a movie.  The models did an amazing job of keeping in character and I think that comes through in the images. I never get to shoot mostly boys for a story, so this was another unique factor.

If you could describe your photography in three words, what would they be?

Hard for me to describe in three words but I would say I strive for my photography to have a narrative, feel authentic and have the right energy.

If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Hmm maybe shooting in outer space? I loved taking pictures in Morocco – so many textures.  However, I truly enjoy shooting at any great location, it gives so much energy to the overall shoot.

What inspired you to begin a career in photography?

I have always felt very inspired by art and imagery, whether it be a painting, a photograph, or a particular image. I studied art history in college and wound up working on low-budget independent films after graduating, that was an education in itself! Eventually, I started focusing more on photography but I still feel very much connected and inspired by art in all forms and love the entire collaborative process in capturing an image.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would your dream career be?

If I was not a photographer, I possibly might have been an interior designer, both create their own worlds.

If you had the opportunity to learn from any photographer, who would you choose?

Glen Luchford, Helmut Newton, Tim Walker, Sally Mann, who are all very different but I love their images and how they create entirely different worlds. All have a true visual narrative.

What is your favourite part about living/being a photographer in NYC?

I love being a photographer in NYC! New York is so full of energy and the electricity of the city feeds me on many levels. NYC constantly inspires and challenges me. I’m always learning something new or discovering a new spot. It’s like another big relationship in my life.
