Q & A with photographer Elizabeth Rudge:

JS: Where did you get the inspiration for From the Block from?

ER: When it came to From the Block Editorial inspiration, I was drawn to a photograph I saw with a grid pattern overlaid with pieces missing and replaced. I started from there and thought of building grids and playing with squares in any way I could.

I take a lot of inspiration from the designers themselves. I get incredibly excited to attend the children’s trade shows and see what’s on the horizon for kids fashion. I want to make images that highlight my favourite designers and allow the kids to play in them.

JS: What are your favourite parts of a shoot?

ER: My favourite moments are when the kids are just being themselves. You can absolutely not fake personality, and the moment that Heidi Nymark (our HUMA) turned on her blower and Stella reacted I knew we had caught a peak moment (ie, in the image with the bathing suit and robe).

JS: What drew you to kids fashion photography?

ER: I started my career in fashion photography but refined my lens to kids when I became a mother myself. I began to discover designers who are making sustainable AND stylish pieces for the children. I have always loved dressing up and now I get to have full days of dress up with children and there’s nothing in life much better than that!
