Q&A with the photographer of Just Play Ian Boddy.
JS: Where did the inspiration for the Just Play shoot come from?
IB: Becky and I wanted to play around with the idea of boys and girls wearing pieces that didn’t obviously go together, including the notion of boys in girls clothes. There is a nod to the Buffalo Boys* look pioneered by Ray Petri and Jamie Morgan which strongly influenced the 80’s.
JS: Have you worked with Becky before?
IB: Yes, though we do not get a chance to collaborate that often, due to our respective schedules and commercial jobs. I really like Becky’s styling and she always brings a quirky element and has a great eye for detail.
JS: What type of camera did you use for this shoot?
IB: I chose to shoot the story on an old school Hasselblad 500, a camera that demands a very considered approach at a much slower pace than I usually work at. I really enjoyed using this type of camera as it forced me to bring a new element to my work.
*The Buffalo collective was a maverick collective made up of photographers, designers and artists that shaped the landscape of 80’s fashion.
