I have long been a supporter of independent kidswear labels. Fifteen years ago when I first started out with our Junior Style events, the kidswear market was dominated by the two extremes of mainstream brands from the high street and very high-end designer labels. You had Gap, Next and designer labels such as Ralph Lauren, basically— and it was hard to uncover the independent labels back then.
Gradually through the Junior Style children’s fashion events and our online store Junior Style were able to offer several platforms to upcoming childrenswear designers to showcase their collections to consumers.
With the growth of independent brands and retailers over the last 10 years+, there are now a number of trade shows specialising in showcasing independent kidswear labels and emerging brands. Pitti Bimbo is one of the oldest trade events for kids fashion yet always seeks to bring new ideas and concepts to ever engage the buyer and trade professionals and now incorporates a wealth of independent brands in specialised sections in its event.
It is only fitting after sharing with you highlights from the fashion shows at the recent Pitti Bimbo 87, that we also highlight the Nest area of the popular trade show, part of Pitti Immagine which takes place in Florence biannually and attracts visitors from around the globe.
The Nest is an exclusive section of independent kidswear labels selected in collaboration with Little Pop Up Berlin. Niche brands with a strong sustainable brand ethos, where creativity and passion shine through in timeless, simple designs feature in this carefully curated space. This season UPA kidswear, Knit Planet (featured below), The New Society were amongst some of the young labels showcasing their new collection.
The Pirouette One To Watch Award is an industry award which supports and highlights young emerging talent in kid’s fashion and design. Below are the winners of the One To Watch Award at Pitti Bimbo 87, Spanish brand The New Society and Ciao Coyote.
You can find a full list of the brands showcased in Pitti bimbo 87 Nest area here.
